Sista helgen i oktober fick jag uppleva något riktigt intressant: Ett alvablot på Birka.
Birka, på ön Björkö i Mälaren, var ett vikingatida samhälle som ofta kallas för ”Sveriges första stad”. Idag är det ett av Sveriges världsarv som man kan resa till och lära sig mer om vikingatiden. Här finns bland annat ett museum, ett rekonstruerat vikingakvarter samt ett enormt gravfält. I slutet av oktober hade Birka temahelgen Alvablot på Birka – ”Vikingarnas Halloween”. En temahelg med extra stort fokus på magi och mystiska väsen inom den nordiska mytologin. Hur kul?
Ska väl vara transparent med att jag hängt på Birka en hel del i och med att det är ett av varumärkena jag jobbar med till vardags. Men detta var första gången jag reste dit i egenskap av ”vanlig besökare” och inte för att jobba. Vilket självklart gjorde det här besöket lite extra roligt. Jag tog med mig en vän och vi utforskade Birka på hösten – mitt bland alver och gudar.

Båtresa till Birka från Stockholm
Båtresan från Stockholm till Björkö och Birka tar strax över två timmar och vi möttes av ett magiskt vackert Mälaren i höstskrud. Vädret imponerade verkligen då alla väderappar hade utlovat moln och regn, men istället fick vi solsken.
Ombord på båten berättade en guide om platserna som passerades och hur de hängde ihop med vikingatiden.
Magi och mystiska väsen på Birka
Väl framme på Birka möttes vi av en så kallad Völva, en stavbärande ”vikingahäxa” eller ”spådam”. Hon tog med oss ut bland gravhögarna där vi fick möta olika alver och gudar. Så kul sätt att få lära sig mer om den nordiska mytologin.
Lunch på Restaurang Särimner
Efter turen på gravfältet gick vi till restaurangen Särimner för att äta lunch. Mjöd och veganska rödbetsbiffar i en vikingainspirerad miljö. Så trevligt.
Alvablot på Birka
Efter lunch var det hög tid för själva alvablotet. Ett blot är ett offer man enligt nordisk religion gör för att vinna alvernas eller gudarnas välvilja. Ett alvablot i sin tur är ett blot som görs på senhösten.
Under blotet fick vi titta på hur ett historiskt blot kan ha gått till medan en guide berättade om olika föremåls symbolik och varför man tros ha gjort som man gjort. I slutet välkomnades även vi besökare att själva offra en blomma eller vackert löv till gudarna. Ändå ganska mysigt.
Höst i vikingakvarteret
Efter blotet kunde man följa med på den ”vanliga” guidade turen som Birka har. Men då vi båda gått den turen tidigare bestämde vi oss för att gå omkring på egen hand istället. Vi tog oss bland annat till det rekonstruerade vikingakvarteret som var så himla fint med alla höstfärger.
Ansgarskorset på Borgberget
Vi tog även en sväng in på museet innan vi gav oss ut till det ”riktiga” Birka, alltså den delen av Björkö där vikingastaden faktiskt låg. Vi tog oss upp på Borgberget som inte bara bjuder på en fantastisk utsikt över Mälaren, utan även ett minnesmonument i form av ett kors.
Detta kors kallas för Ansgarskorset då det restes till minne av Ansgar, ”Nordens apostel” som sägs vara den som tog kristendomen till Norden.
Bågskytte på Birka
Påväg tillbaka till båten stannade vi till utanför museet där man kunde testa på bågskytte. Jag kan ha fått hybris då instruktören kallade mig ”Katniss Everdeen”. Haha. Men bågskytte är ju verkligen kul, måste göra det betydligt oftare.

Sedan var det sags att hoppa på båten igen efter en härlig dag på vikingaön. Så kul att dels ha fått uppelva Birka på hösten, men även temahelgen med ”vikingarnas Halloween”.

Vilken häftig upplevelse. Jag hade ingen aning om vad alvablot var. Det hade varit kul att åka dit och lära sig mer av Sveriges historia, och avsluta med att offra ett löv.
Hade heller aldrig hört talas om alvablot innan så det var så intressant att få ta del av 🙂

Vi har spenterat flera år på Medeltidsveckan, och även runt om på andra typer av medeltidakrogar och marknader, men vi har aldrig varit på Birka. Trots att vi pratat om det fleeera gånger.
Ja men då låter det ju helt klart som att det är på tiden att åka till Birka 🙂
